Dallas Burriss

Dallas Milton Burris, 85, of Black Oak, passed away, Friday, March 4, 2022, at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio.

He was born in Lewis County on September 26, 1936, a son of the late George William and Ola Fultz Burriss.

Dallas served in the Marine Corps Reserves from September 1959 to April 1965. He retired as Superintendent of Vanceburg Utilities in 1995. He was a member of Black Oak Christian Church, a member of Stone City Masonic Lodge, a board member of the Black Oak Fire Department and the Black Oak Community Cemetery.

He was a man that always had a smile, never met a stranger and had a strong sense of community. Second to his love for his family, Dallas loved the farm. He thought of working on the farm as enjoyment and would spend many days in the fields. He enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time with his family and friends where he could tell a good joke or story. He was also a mentor to many throughout the years.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice Tolle Burriss; one daughter, Kathy (Vic) Holder; three grandchildren, Jessica Holder, Emma Holder-Littleton, and Morgan (Ryan) Roe; seven great-grandchildren, Boston Oppy, Dallas Wayne Littleton, Hayden Littleton, Libby Littleton, Abby Roe, Cole Roe, and Charlie Roe; and three sisters-in-law, Norma Hackworth, Sandra (Dwight) Rouse, and Linda (Don) Evans. A host of nieces, nephews, and other family members also survive who will sadly mourn his passing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Wayne Burriss in 1991; two brothers, Wayne Burriss and Arthur Burriss; one sister, Shirley Liles; one sister-in-law, Audrey Burriss; three brothers-in-law, Jay Withrow, James Liles, and William “Bill” Hackworth; and one nephew, Douglas Evans.

Dallas will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the Black Oak community

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Dickerson Funeral Home, 110 West Second Street in Vanceburg, with Bro. James Girdwood and Bro. Kent Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Black Oak Community Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2022, and after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Dickerson Funeral Home.

A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Dickerson Funeral Home by Stone City Lodge #963.

Pallbearers will be Boston Oppy, Dallas Wayne Littleton, Kevin Box, Ryan Roe, Paul Bruce Swearingen, and Josh Applegate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Black Oak Christian Church, Black Oak Community Cemetery, and Black Oak Fire Department.
