Jeremy Scott "Boggie" Sanders

Jeremy Scott "Boggie" Sanders, 44, of Garrison, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Born in Scioto County, Ohio, on June 5, 1966, to Selby Jean Hall Sanders of Garrison and the late Joseph Sanders, he was a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Thurman Sanders; and one daughter, Samantha Jo Sanders, at home.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010, at Skidmore Cemetery at Garrison with Bro. David Thayer officiating.

Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg is in charge of arrangements.

Jim J. Pruitt

Jim J. Pruitt, 81, of Bucyrus, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, August 10, 2010, in Heartland of Bucyrus. He had been seriously ill the past month.

He was born September 26, 1928, in Garrison and was the son of the late Henry and Mary Belle (Potters) Pruitt.

On February 9, 1952, he married Mary Lee Horsley and she preceded him in death on August 24, 1980. Jim later married Gertrude (Jewell) Nickler on August 6, 1982, and she preceded him in death on November 6, 2002. He is also preceded in death by two infants, Jimmy and Laquita Pruitt; a daughter, Rhoda Pruitt; two grandchildren, Danielle and David Brown; three brothers, Mitchell Jewell Pruitt, John Raymond Pruitt and Wayne Pruitt; two sisters, Opal and Alma Bloomfield; and two step-children, Phyllis Brown and Wayne Nickler.

Jim is survived by two daughters, Angela (Ron) Brown of Flint, Michigan, and Nedra "Peewee" (Larry) Butler of Bucyrus; three step-children, Brenda (Randy) Fletcher of Carey, Ohio, Roy (Pam) Nickler of Bucyrus and Janice (Jim) Sutter of Willard, Ohio; three grandchildren, Ronnie Brown Jr. of Flint, Janice Butler and Crystal (Virgil) Jennings, both of Bucyrus; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil (Hilda) Pruitt and Oscar (Wanda) Pruitt, both of Garrison; and a sister, Grace (Jack) Fannin of South Shore.

Jim was a Korean War veteran, serving from 1952-1954 stationed in Alaska. He worked for the railroad and Crawford Steel as well as at Bucyrus Blades from 1955 until 1990. Jim attended the International Pentecostal Church of Christ in Marion, Ohio, and was a licensed evangelist through the Ripley Chapel in Willard, Ohio.

Services were Friday, August 13, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home at South Shore. Burial with military honors was in Collier Memorial Gardens at South Portsmouth.

Charles Douglas Bronson Jr.

Charles Douglas Bronson Jr., 85, of Vanceburg, formerly of Michigan, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.

Mr. Bronson was born on February 5, 1925, in Huntington, West Virginia, to the late Charles Bronson Sr. and Lucille Burgess Bronson. Mr. Bronson was a WWII Navy veteran and a retired mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and was a car enthusiast.

He is survived by special caregivers/friends, April Walker of Concord, Tammy Cooley of Vanceburg and Jeff Thurman of Garrison; five sons, Ricky and Ronnie of Ohio, Doug and Jimmy of California, and Clark of Washington; two daughters, Penny and Detra; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary of Allegan, Michigan, and James of Olive Hill; two sisters, Gretchen Hardin of Taylor Mill and Judy West of White Hall, Michigan.

Besides his parents, Mr. Bronson was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette; a spouse, JoAnn Frazier Bronson; three brothers, William, Ron and Robert; and a sister, Betty.

Services were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Rev. Samuel Jones officiating. Burial was in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak. Military gravesite rites were accorded by Monte Lewis Stamm VFW Post 5438 of Vanceburg.

Nancy Riedinger Feather

Nancy Riedinger Feather, 77, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 10:35 p.m. at the Abernethy Laurels Nursing Home in Newton, North Carolina, after an extended illness. 

Born July 30, 1933, in Vanceburg, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Riedinger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harry Beck Feather, and one brother, Charles "Jake" Riedinger.

She is survived by a son, Leland James Cook, and his wife, Susan, of Conover, North Carolina; a daughter, Ann Frances Cook of Mt. Sterling; a grandson, Leland James Cook Jr., a granddaughter, Jessica Suzanne Smythe and husband, Kevin Smythe, of Raleigh, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Rebecca Riedinger of Vanceburg; a nephew, Matthew Riedinger; two nieces, Amy Arnett and husband, Daniel, and Amanda Ackerman; two step-sons, John Feather and wife, Candie, and Harry Feather and wife, Jan; five grandchildren, Jake Feather, Curtis and Nadin Feather, Amos Feather, Kristin Holzer, Tia Feather and Brandon Feather; and two great-grandchildren, Ezra and Eli.

Nancy was active in the Christian Church in both Vanceburg and Danville. She played piano and organ for the Vanceburg Christian Church. She was a graduate of Lewis County High School and moved to Lexington where she was in retail buying for Embry's Department Store. She later worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Through her special love of gardening and flowers, she spent many enjoyable hours working in her garden. Nancy also loved to dance even into her 70s. She truly enjoyed living and will be missed by family and friends.

Services were Monday, August 16, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Dr. Brad Walden officiating. Burial was in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.

Olive Lucille Hester

Olive Lucille Hester, 84, of Vanceburg, died at 7:34 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Born at Vanceburg on July 6, 1926, to the late Warner Clary Edington and Nicie Bloomfield Edington, she was retired from US Shoe Corporation in Vanceburg. She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Monte Lewis Stamm VFW Post 5438 and a member of the Vanceburg Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Charles W. Hester of Vanceburg; one sister, Kathryn "Kitty" Withrow of Vanceburg; one granddaughter, Diana Hester of Grove City, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Summer Saaveda and Eddie Roberts III.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ochel Hester, on February 23, 1994; and three sisters, Carrie E. Warren, Beulah Toller and Oma Hinton.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2010, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Bro. Nelson Evans officiating. Burial was in Black Oak Cemetery.

Gary L. Short

Gary L. Short, 53, of Tollesboro, died Monday, August 23, 2010, at his home.

Born in Dayton on March 4, 1957, to the late Mitchell Short and Charity Sebastian, he was a farmer and Royal Rangers Associate with the Assembly Faith of God. He was a member of the Assembly Faith of God.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Short; one daughter, Emily Ann Short at home; two sons, Justin Josiah Short and Nicholas Lee Short, both at home; and three sisters, Louise Burch of Florida, Helen Jean (Jack) Keller of Melbourne, and Cheryl Harris of Alexandria.

Services were at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro with Bro. John Moore officiating. Graveside services and burial were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2010, at Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Thomas.

Wendell Douglas

Wendell Douglas, 70, of Tollesboro, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at his home.

Born in Lewis County on June 18, 1940, to Marvin and Georgia Mae Reeder Douglas, he was a farmer, a Kentucky Colonel and member of Tollesboro Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Douglas; two daughters, Jacqui (John) Cordle and Sheri (Todd) Wilson of Tollesboro; one son, Tim (Tracey) Douglas of Tollesboro; one sister, Joyce Elaine Douglas of Flemingsburg; and five grandchildren, Taylor Douglas, Timothy Douglas, Stephen Cordle, John Paul Cordle and Nicholas Wilson.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro with John Cordle officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Garden of Memories at Plumville.

Pallbearers were Gene Johns, Jeff Geagley, Dale Griffith, Tom Wilson, Bill Wallingford and Earl Henderson.

SPC Christopher Wright

SPC Christopher Shane Wright, 23, of Tollesboro, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010, in Afghanistan. He was wounded during a firefight as insurgents attacked his unit and later succumbed to the wounds. He died during surgery at a treatment center.

Born January 31, 1987, to Linda Wright Dennis of Jefferson, Indiana, and James A. Cochran of Tollesboro, he was a US Army Ranger and served as a squad automatic weapons gunner in the 75th Ranger Regiment.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his step-mother, Michele Cochran; one sister, Mary Ann Dennis; and three brothers, Zachary Pope, Zane Pope and Andrew Dennis.

SPC Wright enlisted in the US Army in September 2004 and served as a rifleman in the 5th Infantry Regiment in Fort Lewis, Washington, and later with the 2nd Armor Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, Germany.

Among the commendations he received are the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Combat Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Medal and Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Services were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Tollesboro Christian Church with Bro. John Moore officiating. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery.

Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro was in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. McElhaney Liles

Helen M. McElhaney Liles, 77, of Garrison, went to be with her Lord Saturday, August 28, 2010, in SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio.

She was born in South Portsmouth on October 16, 1932, a daughter of the late Harry Preston McElhaney and Minnie Crum McElhaney. She was a retired bookkeeper for Art Craft Ornamental in Columbus, Ohio, and was a member of Bivens Chapel Church at Garrison.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Liles, to whom she married December 31, 1952; one son, Billy (Cathy) Liles of Garrison; two brothers, Kelly (Dottie) McElhaney of South Portsmouth and Harry Robert McElhaney of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Windell McElhaney.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Bivens Chapel Church with Rev. Wilma Erwin and Rev. Chris Lawhun officiating.

Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore was in charge of arrangements.

Leanne Wheeler Thompson

Leanne Wheeler Thompson, 79, of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010.

Born on December 24, 1930, she was a daughter of Mildred Marie and Howard Martin Wheeler.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Christ Community Church in Portsmouth. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at FC Daehler Mortuary in Portsmouth.

Memorials may be made to SOMC Hospice or Christ Community Church.
