Walt Tackett
Walt
Tackett, 56, of Vance Creek in Quincy, passed away Sunday morning, January 22,
2012, at his residence.
He
was born February 5, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late Clarence and
Vada Cole Tackett.
Walt
was of the Christian faith and was a retired carpenter. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing, spending time outdoors, watching the Kentucky Wildcats, and spending
time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors
include his wife of 36 years, Vicki Vance Tackett; one daughter, April (Danny)
Stidam of Quincy; two sons, Bryan (Rebecca) Tackett of Quincy and Jason
(Cassandra) Tackett of Garrison; eight grandchildren; one sister, Debbie (Tom)
Sullivan of Quincy; and two brothers, Ted (Sue) Tackett and Fitzgerald (Melissa)
Tackett, both of Quincy. He also leaves many other family members and friends
who will sadly mourn his passing.
He
was preceded in death by one sister, Tina Durham; and one brother, Parnell
Tackett.
A
graveside service was at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the Maddy
Lewis Cemetery on Tannery Hill in Lewis County, Kentucky, with Bro. Gary Proehl
officiating.
Globe
Family Funeral Chapel in Garrison was in charge of all arrangements.

Martha
Lucille Bertram
Martha
Lucille Bertram, 91, formerly of Lexington, passed away Tuesday, January 10,
2012, at the Lutheran Commons in Orlando, Florida. She was fondly known to her
friends and family as Lucille or Mrs. B.
She
was born March 11, 1920, at Vanceburg, a daughter of the late John Foreman
Bertram and Jenny Ruark Bertram. A 1940 graduate of the University of Kentucky,
she was a member of
Alpha Gamma Delta. Lucille majored in home economics and taught after
graduation. Her later vocations included keeping books for a medical practice
and owning and managing beauty salons in Lexington. In 1996, she moved to
Orlando, Florida, to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. Lucille was
an active reader, card player and needle pointer. Her favorite pastimes included
attending thoroughbred horse races at Keeneland and watching University of
Kentucky basketball.
Survivors
include two daughters, Susan (Philip) Block of Sarasota, Florida, and Mary
(Scott) Johnson of Orlando, Florida. Also surviving are grandchildren P.J.
(Angela) Block, Christine Johnson,
and Jeff Johnson; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Block; and
several nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Pugh; and four brothers, Charles,
Robert, John, and William.
A
graveside service will be held later in Kentucky. Memorial contributions may be
made to Vitas Hospice Charity Fund or to the General Scholarship Fund at the
University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Roy Delbert Polley
Roy
Delbert Polley, 76, passed away Monday, January 16, 2012, at 8:48 a.m., with
his family by his side at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, following an
extended illness.
He
was born May 14, 1935, at Vanceburg, a son of Sudie Mae Bennett Polley of
Tollesboro and the late Wilford Roy Polley. He was a farmer and worked for US
Shoe in Vanceburg. He was of the Christian faith.
In
addition to his mother, survivors include eight daughters, Kathy (Gary)
Jordan, Sheila (Jerry) Cooper, and Donna Fite, all of Vanceburg, Lodena
McGlone of Carter City, Melissa (James) McClurg of Shelbyville, Delta (Fred)
Applegate of Flemingsburg, Lisa (Stan) Mitic of Brooksville, and Sandra
(Billy) Bell of Delaware, Ohio; one son, Ray (Amanda) Polley of Vanceburg; one
brother, Joe Polley of Tollesboro; 23 grandchildren; and 21
great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Flinders Polley; one daughter,
Tammy Polley; and three brothers, Hobert Polley, Emery Polley, and Donnie
Polley.
Services
were at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Gaydos Funeral Home in
Vanceburg with Pastor Arthur Whiteman officiating. Burial was in Muses Chapel
Cemetery at Quicks Run.

Lillian Richmond Carpenter

Lillian
Richmond Carpenter, 83, of Old Trace Creek in Emerson, went home
to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, January 18, 2012, at the
residence of her son.
She
was born August 26, 1928, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late
Jack and Arlie Bell Zornes Richmond.
Lillian
was a member of the Old Trace Community Church for more than 65
years where she was the song leader until she was unable to do so
because of her health. She was a homemaker and loved going to
church and spending time with her family, friends, granddaughter,
and especially her two great-grandchildren.
Survivors
include one son, Dallas (Carol) Carpenter of Emerson; one sister
and brother-in-law, Bertie (Carl) Fannin of Emerson; one brother,
Claudie (Hazel) Richmond of Emerson; one granddaughter, Erica
(J.D.) Thurman of Emerson; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Thurman
and Casey Thurman, both of Emerson; two special neighbor children
who she thought of as her grandchildren, Aaron and Deanna Zornes;
a special sister-in-law, Donna Jean Richmond of Stout, Ohio; and a
special brother-in-law, Douglas Taylor of Stout, Ohio. She also
leaves many other extended family members, friends, and neighbors
who will sadly miss her.
She
was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert
"Junior" Carpenter Jr.; two sisters, Cassie Richmond and
Betty Taylor; and two brothers, Marcus Richmond and Ernie
Richmond.
Services
will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2012, at the Old
Trace Community Church in Lewis County with Bro. Lonnie Orcutt,
Bro. Jim Porter, and Bro. Charlie Riggs officiating. Burial will
follow in the Old Trace Community Cemetery.
Friends
may call from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012,
and until the service hour on Friday at the Old Trace Community
Church in Lewis County.
Lonnie
Orcutt, Jim Clary, Johnny Zornes, Douglas Zornes, Bobby Burge,
Ronnie Chinn, and Aaron Zornes will serve as pallbearers.

Thurman
Wanda Carolyn
"Evalena" Thurman, 70, of Garrison, passed away Thursday, January 19,
2012, at 5:50 p.m., at her residence.
Born May 13,
1941, at Hyden, she was a daughter of Dolphie Morgan Farler of Hyden and the
late Bennie Farler. She was a housewife and of the Christian faith.
In addition to
her mother, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Sanders and April (Hank)
McCleese, both of Garrison; three sons, Jeff (Sharon) Thurman, Brian (Stacy)
Thurman and Kevin (Christine) Thurman, all of Garrison; six sisters, Barbara
(Tom) Smith of Hyden, Lula Mae (Ted) Hensley of Metamora, Indiana, Betty (Brown)
Morgan of Connersville, Indiana, Bonnie Young of Rushville, Indiana, Edna
(Melvin) Carver of Garrison, and Nancy (Calin) Morgan of Vanceburg; two
brothers, Roy (Barbara) Farler of Hyden and Jim (Donna) Farler of Connersville,
Indiana; and 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her husband of 48 years, Easter Wayne Thurman, who died March 31,
2011; a brother, Jerry Farler; a grandson, Aaron Mathew Thurman; and a
son-in-law, Jeremy Scott "Boggie" Sanders.
Graveside
services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Skidmore
Cemetery at Garrison with Rev. Wilma Erwin officiating. There will be no
visitation.

Rev.
William A. Lykins
Rev.
William A. Lykins, 83, “graduated to glory” at 5:00 a.m., Thursday,
January 19, 2012.
He
was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on April 16, 1928, to the late Luster and
Matilda Lykins.
He
was a student at the University of Kentucky, when he became ordained to
pastor Pinckard Baptist Church in 1950 at Versailles. He had married Laura
Fannin on April 2, 1949. After college he attended Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary getting a Masters in Theology in 1957. Churches where
he ministered were: First Baptist, Byesville, Ohio; Beulah Baptist,
Proctorville, Ohio; Porterfield Baptist, Little Hocking, Ohio; two terms at
Central Baptist, Portsmouth, Ohio; Grace Baptist, Akron, Ohio; First
Baptist, Flora, Illinois. After retiring from the active pastorate in April
1993, he worked to complete a Verse by Verse, Word by Word lexicon of the
Greek New Testament. This he donated to Tri-State Bible College in South
Point, Ohio. This work is being shared with seminaries, colleges, ministers
and missionaries. Tri-State hopes to get the lexicon published.
Survivors
include his loving wife of 62 years, Laura; children, Victoria Nagle,
Elizabeth and Jonathan Lykins; grandchildren, Rachel Ban, Erika Balzano and
Caroline Lykins; great-grandchildren, Skye Thurston, Bryce and Alessa
Balzano; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the
staff at AGMC and Hospice of Ridgewood Rd.
A
memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at
The First Baptist Church, 1670 Shatto Ave., Akron, Ohio.
Inurnment
at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.

Mitchell
Dale Riley, 46, of Bucyrus, Ohio, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, in
Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Mitchell was born August 31,
1965, in Vanceburg, to the late Carl Vincent and Ida Marie (Knell) Riley. He
was married August 22, 2003, to Christina Sue (Crawford) Riley who survives.
Mitchell
was a roofer and last worked for Home Sheet Metal.
In
addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Adam Riley, Abbie
Riley, and Ryan Riley; one step-son, Timothy Crawford; two grandchildren,
Joshua and Sunnie Radebaugh; eight siblings Ruth (Billy) Gillispie of
Winchester, Ohio, Barb (Johnny) Goodwin of Tollesboro, twin brother, Martin of
Batavia, Carl Riley Jr. of Portsmouth, Ohio, Doug (Janet) of Batavia, David of
Tollesboro, Danny (Jeanne) of Portsmouth; Johnny of Portsmouth; many nieces
and nephews, aunts and uncles, as well as former wife and friend Kathie Joann
Riley, and special friends, Greg Zornes, Mandy and Steve Bloom, Barb Sharp,
and mother and father in law, Robert and Faye Cox.
He
was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Vincent Riley.
At
his request there will be cremation with a celebration of life service at a
later date. The Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus, Ohio, is assisting the
family with arrangements.

was born at Canelton, West Virginia, on January 21, 1922, the daughter of

attended Bethlehem Church of Christ.

were at Noon, Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Bethlehem Church of Christ with
Tom Claibourne officiating. Burial was in Cherry Fork Cemetery .

Irene Rowley Potter, 88, of Garrison, went to be with her Lord, Thursday,
January 26, 2012, at her residence.
She
was born in Scioto County, Ohio, on September 13, 1923, a daughter of the late
Walter Rowley and Mary Lewis Rowley.
She
was a homemaker, housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,
great-great-grandmother and sister.
Survivors
include two daughters, Loretta Potter of Garrison and Alberta Orlandi of Dry
Ridge; four sons, Norman (Jane) Potter of Quincy, William Isaac (Debbie) Potter
Jr. of Union, Tom (Billie) Potter of Garrison, and Joe (Marla) Potter of
Vanceburg; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and seven
great-great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, William Isaac Potter, October 3, 1997; one
son, Harold Dean Potter; and two sisters, Eva Ward and Nellie Adkins.
Services
were at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2012, at Roberson Funeral Home in South
Shore with Rev. Norman Potter officiating. Burial was in Collier Memorial
Gardens in South Portsmouth.

Danny
"Joe" Lee Elliott, 70, of KY 344, Vanceburg, passed away at his home
Friday, January 27, 2012, at 3:25 a.m. with his family by his side following an
extended illness.
Born
November 12, 1941, in Lewis County, to the late James H. and Zella Cropper
Elliott, he was a manager for the Circle K Convenient Stores in Arizona and was
a member and deacon of the Foxport Baptist Church.
Survivors
include his wife of 49 years, Geraldine Sparks Elliott, whom he married April 7,
1962, in Lewis County; one son, Derrick A. (Anita) Elliott of Russell; five
sisters, Judy (Jerry) Meranda of Batavia, Ohio, Nina (Howard) Mullikin of
Cincinnati, Ohio, Phyllis (Lowell) Hester of Maysville, Jewell (Von) Himes of
Mesa, Arizona, and Gayle Yingst of Follansbee, West
Virginia; one brother, James N. (Pat) Elliott of Tollesboro; and two
grandchildren, Jessica and Joshua Elliott.
He
was preceded in death by two sisters, Imogene Applegate and Muzetta Claypool;
and three brothers, Warren Elliott, Clyde Elliott, and Dean Elliott.
Services
will be Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at Foxport Baptist Church with
Bro. Arthur Moore and Bro. Carl Hall officiating. Burial will be in Thomas
Cemetery in Lewis County.

from 11:00 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at Foxport Baptist Church in
Wallingford.
