David Price

David Price, 47, of South Portsmouth, died Monday afternoon, February 8, 2010, at the residence of his sister.

He was born April 13, 1962, in Scioto County, Ohio, to the late Carl and Norma Fraley Price. He was a Christian and attended the Cedar Street Baptist Church in New Boston, Ohio. He was a former employee of the Village of New Boston, Ohio, as a janitor.

Survivors include his sister, Tina Leslie of South Portsmouth.

A memorial service was held at the convenience of the family. Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix was in charge of arrangements.

 

Wilma Jeanne Smith

Wilma Jeanne Wicker Smith, 69, of Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of Firebrick, died Saturday, February 20, 2010, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

She was at South Shore on September 1, 1940, to the late Everett Jack Wicker and Lillian Cox Wicker Greene.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherry (Mark) McCane of Vanceburg, Merry Ellen Portillo-Corral and Brandy Smith, both of Tucson, Arizona; one son, Mike (Carol) Zornes of McDermott, Ohio; two sisters, Vera Cooper of Tucson and Pat Anderson of Wyandotte, Michigan; one brother, Billy Joe Wicker of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Esther Anderson; and one brother, Jack Wicker.

Services were at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Roberson Funeral at South Shore with Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Zornes-Firebrick Cemetery at Firebrick.

 

Elmer Jim Sparks

Elmer Jim Sparks, 91, of Vanceburg, died at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at the home of his daughter following an extended illness.

Born in Lewis County on April 21, 1918, to the late Walter and Cecil Botkins Sparks, he was a farmer and self-employed truck driver. He was a member of the Vanceburg First Baptist Church and had served as a deacon there.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana Sue Hersh and Patty Ann (Johnny) Mefford, both of Vanceburg; nine sons, Jerry Thomas (Betty) Sparks of Garrison, Gary Dean (Denyse) Sparks, Dennis Lee (Linda) Sparks, Jeffrey Ray Sparks, Bradley Dean (Angie) Sparks, James J. Sparks and Gregory Allen (Roberta) Sparks, all of Vanceburg, Michael David (Marie) Sparks of Vermillion, Ohio, and Roger Dale (Judy) Sparks of New London, Ohio; one sister, Mary Rosenkotter of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, George Sparks of Huntsville, Alabama; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Gilbert Sparks, in 1998; a daughter, Joyce Scott; six sisters; and one brother.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Vanceburg First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Wilson officiating. Burial was in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.

 

Goldie Jewell Stidam

Goldie Jewell Stidam, 82, of Wallingford, died Wednesday morning, February 17, 2010, at Fleming County Hospital.

She was born on September 30, 1927, in Lewis County to the late Charles and Rebecca Evans Howell.

Survivors include one daughter, Angela (Bill) Compton of Wallingford; one son, Marvin (Charlotte) Stidam of Connersville, Indiana; two sisters, Gladys Bradley of Flemingsburg and Geraldine Porter of Wallingford; one brother, Ray Howell of New Castle, Indiana; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Franklin Stidam, on February 13, 2006; five sisters, Gracie M. Howell, Flora Jones, Nola Fields, Gertrude Howell and Dora Howell; and one brother, Walter Howell.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2010, at Petersville Christian Church with Rev. Arnold Howell and Bro. Jim Porter officiating. Burial was in Esham Cemetery.

Boone-Nickell Funeral Home in Flemingsburg was in charge of arrangements.

 

Oleta Craycraft Thomas

Oleta Craycraft Thomas, 96, of Flemingsburg, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg.

Born in Lewis County on December 7, 1913, to the late Scott and Annalee Ferguson Craycraft, she was a housewife and member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three children, Billy C. (Gloria) Thomas of Poplar Grove, Shelby J. Wallingford of Stanton and Winnie (Tom) Bigelow of Poplar Grove; three sisters, Clark Stanfield of Mason County, Leona Lanthorn of Tollesboro and Bernice Cropper of Ft. Mitchell; eight grandchildren, Debbie (Sam) White, Tommy (Amanda) Bigelow, Jackie (Jerry) Lowe, Kelly Wallingford, Teresa (Greg) Arrasmith, Tim (Terena) Wallingford, Cathy (Stevie) Adams and Bill Richard Thomas; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edman Thomas; and two brothers, Thomas Ray Craycraft and Glenn Craycraft.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Burial was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

 

Sharon Ann Thurman

Sharon Ann Thurman, 53, of Wallingford, died Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.

Born in Lewis County on December 4, 1956, to Violet Clark Highfield of Tollesboro and the late Omer Thurman, she was a member of Fox Valley Church.

In addition to her mother, survivors include two sisters, Mary (Richard) Howard and Betty (Billy) Howard, both of Maysville; three brothers, James Thurman of Tollesboro, Rodger (Noreen) Highfield of Manchester, Ohio, and Randy (Vivian) Highfield of Maysville; several nieces and nephews; and two great-nephews.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro with Bro. Charles Emmons officiating. Burial was in Mt. Tabor Cemetery at Ribolt.

 

Tim Ray Thurman

Tim Ray Thurman, 50, of Vanceburg died at 8:35 a.m. Friday, January 1, 2010, at Hospice of Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Born May 5, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan, to Annie Evans Thurman of Vanceburg and the late James William Thurman, he was a self-employed landscaper.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 31 years, Velva Hobbs Thurman; three sons, Kevin (Barbie) Thurman and Jerrad Thurman, both of Vanceburg, and Jeremy Thurman at home; two sisters, Karla Thurman and Sheila (Lionel) Cooper, both of Vanceburg; four brothers, Dean (Rose) Thurman, Jamie (Becky) Thurman and Billy Thurman, all of Vanceburg; and Gene (Sherry) Thurman of Ft. Myers, Florida; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Thurman.

Services were at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Bro. Anthony Corns officiating. Burial was in the Thurman Family Cemetery at Rock Run.

 

Myrtle Thomas

Myrtle Lenora McDaniel Thomas, 78, of Olive Hill, died Saturday morning, February 13, 2010, at her residence.

She was born June 4, 1931, in Carter County to the late Drew and Anna Mae Burchett McDaniel. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Vickie Thomas Workman of Maysville, Lenora D. Thomas and Elizabeth Ilene Thomas both of Olive Hill, and Maxine Eden of Tennessee; two sons, Ivan (Crystal) Thomas of Olive Hill and Lovangel Dale (Page) Thomas of Maysville; four sisters, Goldie Coleman, Retha Gay and Martha McGlone all of Olive Hill and Bessie Leg of Mansfield, Ohio; two brothers, Jesse McDaniel of Tollesboro and James McDaniel of Olive Hill; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Dewhitt Thomas; one daughter, Edna Mae Thomas; one sister, Mary “Dolly” Branham; four brothers, Walter McDaniel, Eddie McDaniel, William McDaniel and Ben McDaniel; and one grandson, Jimmy Hayden Doyle.

Services were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill with Brother Dale Richmond officiating. Burial was in Erwin Cemetery on Webb Ridge at Olive Hill.
