Larry M. Altvater
Larry M. "Mike" Altvater, 63, of Vanceburg, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, at his home.
Born in Wharton, Ohio, on November 4, 1946, to the late Kenneth M. and Myrtle Parish Altvater, he was a sawmill worker.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Nancy Gardner Altvater; three daughters, Kristy (Matthew) Pack of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Misty Altvater (Charles Phares) and Tara (Joe) Burbrink, both of Vanceburg; one grandchild raised at home, Michael Rowe; two sisters, Audrey Hill of Seymore, Indiana, and Joyce (Richard) Ralph of Kenton, Ohio; five brothers, Dwight (Linda) Altvater of Marion, Ohio, Pete Altvater of Wooster, Ohio, Donnie (Charlotte) Altvater of Findlay, Ohio, Jerry (Susie) Altvater and Richhard (Mary) Altvater, both of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; and eight grandchildren, Anthony Bonner, Desirae Cardwell, Kara Cardwell, Dana Evans, William, Burbrink, Carol Burbrink, Elizabeth Burbrink and Emily Burbrink.
He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Michael Altvater Jr.; four sisters, Margie Balsworth, Judy Helphenstine, Betty Chandler and Jo Ann Altvater; and three brothers, Robert Altvater, Paul Altvater and Gail Altvater.
Services were at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Bro. Tim Underwood officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery at Quincy.
Virgil Billman
Virgil Dean Billman, 68, of Ky. Rt. 59 Vanceburg, died Friday morning, January 8, 2010, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
Born January 1, 1942, in Lewis County to the late Earl and Louella Reis Billman, he had worked as an equipment operator for the Lewis County Road Department for more than 10 years and was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Norma Blevins Billman; two brothers, Harold Billman and Joe Billman, both of Vanceburg; four sisters-in-law, Betty (Darrell) Edington, Linda (Bo) Carver, Barb (Mike) Richmond and Teresa (Roger) Lewis, all of Vanceburg; five brothers-in-law, Bill (Sandy) Blevins, Dean (Trina) Blevins, Danny (Debbie) Blevins, Rick (Connie) Blevins and Tony Blevins, all of Vanceburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Widera; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Minnie Blevins.
Services were 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix with Bro. Jerry Blevins and Bro. John Lewis officiating. Burial was in Vergne Cemetery at Vanceburg.
Margaret Ann Bivens
Margaret Ann Scaggs Brown Bivens, 67, of Navarre, Florida, died at 11:28 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
Born November 7, 1942, in Vanceburg to the late Morgan Ambrose Scaggs and Alice C. Ingraham Scaggs, she was a housewife.
Survivors include her husband, Russell Bivens; two daughters, Alicia (Cliff) Moody of Bradenton, Florida, and Marcia (Ronnie) Hogue of Gulf Breeze, Florida; one son, Jeffrey (Raychul) Bivens of Detroit, Michigan; four brothers, Jerry (Carolyn) Scaggs of Garrison, Morgan (Jennifer) Scaggs of Maysville, Roger (Marilyn) Scaggs of Vanceburg and Bob (Mary Jane) Scaggs of Flemingsburg; two grandchildren, John Moody and Jeremy Hogue; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roger Brown; and one son, Michael Bivens.
Services were at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial was in Black Oak Cemetery.
Services in Navarre were provided by Lewis Funeral Home.
Davis Breeze
Davis Breeze, 67, of Batavia, Ohio, died Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Mercy Clermont Hospital in Batavia.
He was born in Mason County to Edna Opal Garrett Breeze of Tollesboro and the late Arthur Davis Breeze.
Survivors include a special companion, Sandra Henkel of Batavia; two sons, Allen (Donna) Breeze of Franklin, Tennessee, and Jarrod (Emily) Breeze of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters, Nina (Charlie) McFarland of Corpus Christi, Texas, Viva (Bobby) Fetters of Anderson, Indiana, and Judy (Bud) Senters of Aberdeen, Ohio; five grandchildren, Kari Ann Breeze, Haley Nicole Breeze, Alexander Jarrod Breeze, Jonathan Henry Breeze and Lydia Deborah Breeze; three aunts, Jean Lykins of Rectorville, Evelyn Lyons of Illinois, and Mary Ethel Marshall of Felicity, Ohio; and one uncle, Johnny Breeze of Tollesboro.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Breeze.
Services were at Noon on Monday, January 18, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Burial was in Hillcrest Garden of Memories at Plumville.
Elmer Dennis Breeze
Elmer Dennis Breeze, 62, of Tollesboro, died Friday, January 1, 2010, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington.
Born in Maysville on June 23, 1947, to Marian R. Wallingford Breeze of Tollesboro and the late Elmer Lee Breeze, he was a painter and construction worker. He was a veteran of the US Navy and member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his mother survivors include three brothers, Gary (Judy) Breeze, Jim Breeze and Jeff Breeze, all of Tollesboro; two nieces and one nephew.
Graveside services were at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Olivet Cemetery at Maysville with Bro. John Byard officiating.
Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro was in charge of arrangements.
Rebecca Mae Gilliam Bryant
Rebecca Mae Gilliam Bryant, 82, of Vanceburg, died Saturday morning, January 2, 2010, at her home.
Born November 5, 1927, in Lewis County to the late Ira and Marie Richmond Gilliam, she was a retired school teacher having taught in Lewis, Greenup and Mason Counties.
Survivors include two daughters, Lana Sue Bryant of Barboursville, West Virginia, and Sonya (Bill) Stevenson of Vanceburg; one son; William Simpson Bryant Jr. of Vanceburg; six sisters; Mildred Bloomfield, Phyllis (Robert) Bentley, Louise Bloomfield, Carolyn (Delbert) McGlone, all of Vanceburg, Nellie Walters of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and Donetta (Ronnie) Beiland of Lake Milton, Ohio; three brothers, Ronnie (Wilma) Gilliam, Roscoe (Betty) Gilliam, both of Vanceburg, and Oscar (Beulah) Gilliam of Claremore, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a very special cousin, Norman Ackers of Middletown, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William "Tick" Bryant; one sister, Willena Blankenship; two brothers, Bertram Gilliam and Clifford Gilliam; and one granddaughter.
Services were at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix with Bro. Hansel Butler officiating. Burial was in Laurel Road Bryant Family Cemetery on Laurel Road.
Richard Butler
Richard Butler, 85, of Tollesboro, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Life Care Center in Morehead.
Born in Lewis County on October 31, 1924, to the late Russell and Lenora Thurman Butler, he was a farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (Kenny) Noble of Washington; two sons, Gary (Paula) Butler of McDermott, Ohio, and Ronnie (Gail) Butler of Black Oak; one sister, Edith Thurman of Vanceburg; one brother, Danny Butler of Tollesboro; five grandchildren, Lisa Kitchen, Brett Butler, Karie Mendenhall, Chris Butler and Misty Pollitt; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella C. Polley Butler; two sisters, Wanda Cooper and Myrtle Mason; and two brothers, Bud Butler and Billy (Juice) Butler.
Services were at Noon on Friday, January 15, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Burial was in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Marlin Edward Carpenter
Marlin Edward Carpenter, 60, of Vanceburg, died Monday evening, January 4, 2010, at the home of his sister in Charters.
Born, October 18, 1949, in Gallion, Ohio, to the late Carl and Rosie McCoy Carpenter, he was a self-employed farmer and logger. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Connie Mason Carpenter; three daughters, Jennifer Lynn Zed of Mt. Sterling, Angel (Donald) Rison and Patty Carpenter, both of Vanceburg; two sons, Eddie Carpenter of Vanceburg and Michael Edward Carpenter of Flemingsburg; six sisters, Thelma (Jack) Darlington, Annie (Tommie) Reid, Donna (David) Landsaw, all of Flemingsburg, Brenda (Billy Joe) Cropper, Liz (Tim) Cushard, all of Vanceburg, and Fredia Jarrells of Sharpsburg; six brothers, Gary (Pat) Carpenter, Kenneth (Minnie) Carpenter, Robin (Betty) Carpenter, all of Vanceburg, Allen (Rosetta) Carpenter, Bill (Karen) Carpenter and Fred (Connie) Carpenter, all of Flemingsburg; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Marlin Edward Carpenter Jr.; and two brothers, Mark Vernon Carpenter and Carl Ezra Carpenter.
Services were at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix with Bro. John Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery on Holly Road.
Harry Kenneth Carr
Harry Kenneth Carr, son of Chas. E. and Ollie Carr, born December 21, 1909, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the age of 100. He was predeceased by his step-son, George E. Ellis originally of Concord; one sister, Irene Amer of Norwood, Ohio; and a half-brother, Frank Carr of Steubenville, Ohio.
At his passing he leaves his daughter-in-law, Mary C. Ellis, and grandchildren in Northern Kentucky; and several cousins. He was married to the former Helen Ellis.
Services were at Noon on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Burial was in Hillcrest Garden of Memories at Plumville.
Roger Ray Chinn
Roger Ray Chinn, 61, of Vanceburg, died at 11:22 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born at Black Oak on June 13, 1948, to the late Harold and Kathryn Frances Childrey Chinn, he was retired from US Shoe Corporation in Vanceburg and attended Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ray Ann (Steve) Bays of Portsmouth; three sisters, Ruth Chinn of Black Oak, Carol (Raymond) Meadows of Clay City and Pauline (Randy) Burriss of Black Oak; one brother, George Chinn of Black Oak; and one granddaughter, Stephanie Bays.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosemary Chinn and Linda Burriss; and two brothers, James Fredrick Chinn and Raymond Nelson Chinn.
Services were at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial was in Black Oak Cemetery at Black Oak.
Rodney Lane Clark
Rodney Lane Clark, 32, of Pine Valley Road, Tollesboro, died Tuesday morning, February 16, 2010, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
Born November 4, 1977, in Hamilton County, Ohio, to the late Norman and Gladys Bloomfield Clark, he was an employee of Garrison Auction House in Garrison.
Survivors include his wife of three years, Angel Cutlip Clark; one sister, Diana Clark (Meryl Horsley) of Garrison; and three brothers, Norman Franklin Clark (Ursula Duncan) of Tollesboro, William Estill Clark (Brenda Bloomfield) of Vanceburg, and Ralph Edward (Lisa) Clark of Tollesboro.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jennifer Clark and Iris Cress; and two brothers, Donald Clark and Melton Clark.
Services were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix with Bro. Hays Tackett officiating. Burial was in Spy Run Cemetery at Garrison.
Sheila Marie Claxon
Sheila Marie Claxon, 56, of Garrison, died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at her home following an extended illness.
Born in Garrison on August 26, 1953, to the late Elmer Monroe and Mildred Spriggs Clark, she was a homemaker and self-employed businesswoman making homemade crafts. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Survivors include her husband, Ron Claxon of Hodgenville; two daughters, Shona (Josh) Clark and Veronica Claxon, both of Garrison; one son, Duane Ray Irvin of Florida; three sisters, Ellen Logan of Jackson, Ohio, Elsie Tackett of Garrison and Sherl Palmer of Ocala, Florida; one brother, Kenneth Holland of Garrison; and two granddaughters, Emily Rose Lewis of Vanceburg and Kaleigh Mychel King of Garrison.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Holland.
A memorial service was held at the convenience of the family.
Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg was in charge of arrangements.
Cowherd Infant
Michael Xavier Cowherd, eight-months-old, died Thursday, January 28, 2010, in Louisville.
Survivors include his parents, Genie Walters of Maysville and M. Justine Cowherd; and grandparents, Michael and Latosha Cowherd and Kay Walters.
Services were at 9:30 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2010, at Community Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville with Pastor Debbie Horn of Maysville officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Louisville.
WT Shumake and Daughters Funeral Home in Louisville was in charge of arrangements.
John B. Dugan Sr.
John B. Dugan Sr., 81, of Garrison, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, at his home following an extended illness.
Born November 29, 1928, at Tannery to the late John and Sarah "Sally" Frances Wiley Dugan, he was an oiler for Standard Products at Port Clinton, Ohio, for 32 years and was an accomplished musician. He attended the House of Prayer in Garrison.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sophia Cathyrn Bevens Dugan of Garrison; three daughters, Bonnie Ellithorpe of Vanceburg, Brenda (Lester) Rister of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and Marylin Parker of Tiffin, Ohio; three sons, John Dugan of Garrison, James (Paula) Dugan and Paul Ray (Diane) Dugan, both of Port Clinton; one brother-in-law, Doyle Whitten of Toledo, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie Whitten and Laura Hurst; and two brothers, Mart Dugan and Jim Dugan.
Services were 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2010, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Rev. Wilma Erwin officiating. Burial was in Cooper-Willis Cemetery at Garrison.
