| My grandparents lived, and probably died, in Vanceburg,
Kentucky. My grandfather was Amos Aaron Baxter. He appeared
in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Federal Census' reports from Vanceburg. Occupation listed was
teacher. He was born in 1871 and date and whereabouts of death unknown. He was married to
Sarah Sallie Hall (also went by Sallie Jane or Sarah Jane).
Amos had been married previously and sired sons William, James, Joseph, and my father,
Robert. Also had daughters Olive, Elvira, and Polly. Robert was born on April 6, 1921 and
is still living. Due to the depression, he was "loaned" out to neighboring
farms, foster homes, and orphanages along with sister Polly. He never really saw his
father after he was age five. Sallie (or Sarah) died on March 25, 1948. I believe she died
in Vanceburg. Her maiden name was Hall and she was born in Floyd, Kentucky. Amos Baxters'
mother was named Rebecca I. Baxter and was 76 years old on the 1910 census report. Any
info or possible resource site would be greatly appreciated. Ken Baxter baxterjacken@innercite.com |
I am looking for information about a Floyd Lewis. All I know about him is he was married to Bea Williams and
they had a son named William Edward but he was adopted by Bea's sister, Nora Darby and her
husband Hugh Darby in Sophia W.Va. Her sister Bea died. He also had an older bother named
Clyde but I do not think that Floyd Lewis was his father. They did not adopt him until he
was 12 years old but he lived with them since he was about two. He was my father and
passed away in November. I told him I would try to find out about his real father. Nora
was a Williams who was raised in Greenup. She told me that
her sister Bea married Floyd Williams and even after she had my father Floyd Lewis did
write to ask about him but never saw him and then when they adopted him she did not hear
from him any more. I know he is probably not alive any more but he may have some other
children that can tell me about him. If anyone has any information please email me at dawnnelvis@aol.com Thank you Dawn Welborn |
My grandfather's name was Simon Scott. I don't know my grandmother's name. Actually, I don't really
know dates. We moved to Detroit when I was a toddler and while we were there, my mother,
Gladys Pierce Scott, passed away. This would have been in the
early forties. My father brought us back to Kentucky a year or so after my mother's death.
He went back to Detroit and I did not see him or hear from him until I found him in the
early sixties. He passed away soon after that in 1965, I think. I did not know anyone in
my father's family, but would like to hear from any relatives of Simon Scott or Burt
(Bert) Scott. We did go to high school with a Patrica Scott who may be a cousin. She lived
in Vanceburg. I can be reached at 132 Millwood Court, Shepherdsville, KY 40165 or by email
at spotrisk@peoplepc.com Thank you so
much for trying to help me.
Sincerely, Helen May Scott Risk |

| My father James E. McCoy
was born at Stricklett, on July 21, 1907, and died in Portsmouth, Ohio, on August 29,
1971. His parents were William Henry McCoy and Alverta "Allie" Hyrne. William Henry was the son of James McCoy and Sara E. Ginn
Brooks McCoy and grandson of William McCoy and Mary Strode. Allie Hyrne was the daughter
of Charles Hyrne and Elizabeth Dunaway. Elizabeth was the
daughter of John Dunaway and Louisa Stull (daughter of Andrew
Stull and Elizabeth Strait). Charles Hyrne was the son of Leonidas Hyrne (served in the
Civil War)and Eliza Esham. I am a direct descendant of William Ginn
and Sarah Thoroughman who married in Lewis County in 1821 and
of William Esham, early settler in Lewis County from Maryland, through his daughter
Lucretia Esham and her husband Elisha Esham, son of Jonathan Esham of Bourbon County, Ky.
My great-grandfather James McCoy was living in Lewis County in the 1910 census with his
brother William McCoy on Kinney Pike, but the Bureau of Vital Statistics does not have a
death certificate for him. He either died in 1910 or moved out of the state. Also where is
Kinney Pike? I would appreciate any information on my great-grandfather James McCoy and
his wife Sara and on my family lines of Ginn, Dunaway, Hyrne, Esham, Thoroughman, Stull,
McCoy. If there are any photographs of these individuals I would love to hear about it.
Thank you and if I can assist anyone with information please get in touch with me. Shirley

| I'm trying to find records
on family that were born in Lewis County in the 1800's. My great grandfather, George Lewis
Biven was born in 1870 and shows up in the Lewis County
census of 1880 as 10 yrs old. He married Anna Elizabeth Jones. He had a brother Alvin
Benjamin Biven and sisters Matilda (Biven) Kaufmann, Anna (Biven) McNutt and Laura Biven.
He also had an older half-sister, Sarah E. Biven (19 yrs in the 1880 census). His father
was James Henry Biven (b. 1841) who married Permelia Jane Bane in 1868. James was on his
second marriage and was 28 yrs old in 1868 while Permelia was on her first marriage and
was 32 yrs old. I think his first marriage was to a Nancy Hickle (15 yrs old) who shows as
being married to a James Biven (20 yrs old) in the 1860 census (married 8/1859). I'm
trying to find information that will tie James to one of the families of Biven(s) that
lived in Lewis County during the 1800's. I'm also trying to find out exactly where they
lived. They show in the Esculapia Precinct of the 1880 census (I think it was line 464).
On my grandmother's side, Mabel Aleen (Moore) Biven (married to William Henry Biven) I'm
related to the Plummer, Mason, Ferguson, Cox, Jackson, Tomblin and other families. Any
Biven(s) back there with internet that you know of? James Robert Biven |

O'Cull, Davenport. Would love to hear from anyone with ties to these families. E-mail
Rachel Applegate at rapplegate@maysvilleky.net.
