Natural gas rates seeing double-digit increases

December prices for natural gas from Kentucky's five major distributors are up an average of 13 percent, according to the state Public Service Commission. Added to last year's steeper increase, costs are 35 percent to 45 percent more than they were two years ago.

The December increase means a typical residential customer in Kentucky using 1,000 cubic feet of gas a moth will be paying an average of $9.75 more a month compared with last December.

Locally, customers of the Electric Plant Board of the City of Vanceburg will be paying 10 percent more on the December billing cycle.

Superintendent Phil Kennedy said that the company paid their supplier $9.23 per 1,000 cubic feet in November while the cost was $7.00 in October. He said indications are that the rates will continue to increase.

Kennedy said he stored 38,000 cubic feet of natural gas while rates were low to help keep rates down for local customers.

"Because the wholesale price is unregulated, we're sort of at the mercy of the national market, and the national market is at the mercy of a number of things, most significantly the weather," said PSC spokesman Andrew Melnykovych.

Accident claims life of Ewing teen

A Ewing teen died Saturday as the result of a two-vehicle accident in Fleming County.

A spokesman with the Morehead Post of the Kentucky State Police said the accident happened about 2:50 p.m. Saturday on Ky. Rt. 57 near Mt. Carmel.

He said a 1978 Oldsmobile, operated by Isaac A. Knipp, 16, of Ewing, was traveling north on the roadway and attempted to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone.

The spokesman said the Oldsmobile collided with the left front side of an oncoming 1992 Buick, operated by Clorena Logan, 32, of Flemingsburg.

The spokesman said Knipp was pronounced dead at Fleming County Hospital, and that Logan sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Fleming County Hospital for treatment. He added that there was only one occupant in each vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Christina Merriam, she was assisted at the scene by the Mt. Carmel Rescue Squad.
