Meet the Candidates

The decision of whom to vote for is a struggle for many during the election season. As Americans we are often left asking what are the candidates' views, what are their goals for the county, and what are their qualifications?

The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce hopes to answer these and many other questions as they prepare to host their annual Meet the Candidates Night on Thursday, October 26, at Lewis County High School. The event always proves to showcase the goals of the candidates and encourages our county to become active voters!

This year's Meet the Candidates night will welcome over 30 candidates representing state, county and city offices. Races that will be highlighted include congress, senate, state representatives, court of appeals, district judge, family court judge, Vanceburg mayoral race, Lewis County judge executive, jailer, magistrate of Districts 1 and 2, and city council.

Meet the Candidates night will include a Fundraiser Dinner to benefit the LCHS Boosters, a Meet and Greet session where citizens can meet one on one with the candidates, as well as, a forum which will introduce the candidates by position and give each the opportunity to talk about topics related to the growth of Lewis County and our state.

The fundraiser dinner will cost $5.00 and is planning to include chili, pimento cheese sandwich and/or barbeque sandwich and coleslaw, plus drinks.

The times for the event are:

5:30-6:30- Fundraiser Dinner to benefit Lewis CHS Boosters

6:00-6:45- Meet and Greet Session in LCHS Gymnasium

7:00-9:00- Question Forum in LCHS Auditorium

Everyone is invited and encouraged to join the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce at the Meet the Candidates 2006. To increase participation in the event the Chamber has implemented a Prize for Pride Program which will allow those in attendance to register for some great door prizes (must be present to win). Candidates and local businesses have been asked to donate gifts that will be raffled off at the end of the evening. Prizes donated to date include gas gift cards, restaurant gift certificates, Lewis County Herald gift subscription, and much more.

If you need more information regarding the event or are a local business/candidates wishing to donate to Prize for Pride please contact Tracy McGuire by email at tmcguire@lcpcc.org or by phone at 606-796-0183.

George Morgan Thomas Home dedication

Vanceburg City Mayor William T. Cooper, members of city council and members of Vanceburg Renaissance Committee invite everyone to the dedication of the George Morgan Thomas House at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 28. The new visitor's center is located at the corner of Main and Third Streets in downtown Vanceburg.

This was originally the home of Judge George Morgan Thomas and his family when it was built in 1883. Judge Thomas served as a US Senator from this district and also acted as a Solicitor of Internal Revenue.

After the Thomas heirs disposed of this property, it was opened as the Commercial Hotel from the 1920s until 1965. On December 3, 2001, the citizens Deposit Bank and Trust gave the home and property to the City of Vanceburg.

The city received a grant through the Kentucky Renaissance on Main Program and the 15-room home was completely restored.

Come join us -- tour this wonderful home and witness life as it was in days gone by! History you can hear with the Saxton's Cornet Band, a display of the Civil War in Kentucky, and Corset, Croquet and Crusades: Women's Lives 1889-1914.

Also on Saturday, meet William "Bull" Nelson, a Union general (played by Russell Dickson of Maysville) 2nd KY Inf. Co. G, Hamilton Guard of Paris (Confederate Unit) and the Lewis County Theatre Guild, a book signing by Deirdre Skaggs and a photography series by Monica Stafford.

Sheriff warns of area scams

Lewis County Sheriff Bill Lewis would like to advise area residents of more scams being conducted in the area.

Lewis said that several residents have notified the office that they have received calls from someone saying they are either bank examiners or someone from Washington DC, saying there will be changes made to their bank accounts and asking for verification of banking account numbers off their checks.

Lewis says that he advises area residents not to give out any personal information, especially banking account numbers, to anyone.

If you should receive one of these calls, Lewis asks that you notify the Sheriff's Department at 606-796-2912.

Lewis also said that an area resident received a letter from "Royal British Lotto", informing them that they were a winner in a recent drawing. He said that if you receive one of these letters, you should disregard it and not give any information to the letter writer.
