Park facilities open in Lewis County

Lewis County Judge Executive Steve Applegate and the members of Lewis County Fiscal Court are proud to announce the opening of two park facilities in Lewis County.

One is located on Highway 59 south of Vanceburg about eight miles and the other is located on Highway 344 about four miles from the intersection of Highways 344 and 59.

The park facilities are open to the public and includes shelter areas with picnic tables. The grounds are attractive and maintained by the county. The Lewis County park facilities were completely funded by state grants.

According to Applegate, future plans include playground equipment and walking tracks. Plans are in the works for possibly one or two more park facilities located throughout the county.

He also added the parks will provide a great place for any family occasion and will promote tourism within the county.

If anyone has any questions concerning the use and availability of the park facilities, call Applegate's office at 606-796-2722.

FoodWorld is now Ron's IGA

By Al Owens

Ron and Lena Stamper, owners of Ron's Food World, have announced that the store locations in Vanceburg and Tollesboro are now officially Ron's IGA.

They plan to hold a grand opening in August after the remodeling and redecorating now in progress is completed.

Local manager Peggy Hester said that the change was taking place so the store could better achieve its goal of serving and always taking care of its customers.

Hester said, "We’re doing new decorating with a cleaner, fresher appeal."

She added that the business wants to be updated, to have the best products and to position itself to have everything available that the customers always need.

Both she and Ron Stamper said that this move has been under consideration for a couple of years.

Stamper said that he had hoped to open the first of August in time for the grocery chain's Kid's Fest Promotion but delays will necessitate opening a little later in August. He added that the store, however, would still take part in Kid's Fest.

That promotion is regional with about 100 stores involved and features drawings for all kinds of giveaways including a trip to Disney World.

Stamper affirmed that the promotion is all about the kids.

Hester said that the store would be giving away lots of lunch boxes with school supplies like notebooks and pencils inside, gift certificates and also a trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

IGA has some advantages for the business. The chain has a governing board that will come in and see that the local store is doing everything it can do to be first in line with the freshest products, meet all the State Health Department's standards and just oversee the business.

Hester mentioned that with an advertising board the store could have more advertising power and do more radio ads and even have some TV commercials.

Ron Stamper and Peggy Hester explained last week why Ron's Food World is changing to Ron's IGA in August.

The Shannon Holland Construction Company from Cincinnati is doing the redecorating. Ironically two of their employees working at the store, Carl Marshall and Jeff Logan, are from Garrison. Holland is subcontracted to America Store Fixtures.

IGA's motto is "Hometown proud supermarkets around the corner, around the world."

Stamper pointed out that IGA is the only grocery chain in the USA that is national. It is also international with about 2,000 stores in other countries including some overseas.

Stamper received his certificate of license from IGA last week.

He said that the Chairman and CEO of IGA is Dr. Thomas Haggai, an ordained minister out of South Carolina. Haggai is noted for a brief radio program with a thought for the day that has been aired for some time. It may be put on radio locally.

A grand opening is planned, and Hester encourages the community to look for the ads promoting that event.

Deputy investigates accident

The Lewis County Sheriff's Department is investigating a single vehicle accident on Ky. Rt. 59 south of Vanceburg.

Deputy Johnny Bivens said the accident happened July 24 around 10:40 p.m. when an auto operated by Joseph Buckler, 23, of Vanceburg, was traveling north on the roadway. Bivens said the vehicle went off the road in a curve, traveled 71 feet and struck a utility pole, causing the pole to break in two.

He said Buckler was charged with first offense DUI and no insurance.

Bivens said there were no injuries and he is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Camp Dix Fire and Rescue.

Train cars derail near South Shore

AP--About 20 cars of a freight train derailed near South Shore early Saturday, hitting a natural gas line and forcing about 45 people to evacuate, state police said.

No one was hurt when the CSX train cars left the tracks in Beattyville shortly after midnight, state police dispatcher Rebekah Wright said.

Residents were evacuated because officials smelled gas leaking, Trooper Chris Yavorcik said. The evacuation order lasted only two hours.

Columbia Gas of Kentucky was still trying to fix a ruptured natural gas line late Saturday afternoon.

State police closed an interstate and bridge, but reopened both within four hours, Yavorik said.

CSX spokeswoman Jane Covington said company officials were on the scene investigating. The train, which carried steel slabs, started in Columbus, stopped in Russell, to pick up cars and was headed to Cincinnati.
