Downtown gets $200,000 grant

Downtown Vanceburg will see some direct results of being a silver level Renaissance Kentucky Community with the announcement Friday of a $200,000 grant.

The funds will be used to pay for streetscape improvements to Main and Second Streets in Vanceburg.

Governor Paul Patton made the official announcement Friday and said, "I'm pleased to be able to provide funding for this project that preserves the history and enhances the quality of life for the people of Vanceburg."

The project is part of Renaissance Kentucky, a program Governor Patton created in 1997 to assist communities in revitalizing their downtowns.

The funding is made available through the Transportation Cabinet's Federal-aid program under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century as provided by the Federal Highway Administration.

The Transportation Enhancement Program sets aside a portion of Kentucky's annual Surface Transportation Program funds for projects or activities that add community or environmental value to any planned or completed transportation project.

Each project must fall into one of 12 categories such as historic preservation, landscaping, scenic beautification, pedestrian or bicycle facilities. Project requests were reviewed by the Transportation Cabinet for eligibility and forwarded to the Office of the Governor for selection.

Downtown Vanceburg will be receiving funding for improvements to the streetscape thanks to a $200,000 grant made possible by Vanceburg's silver level as a Renaissance Kentucky community. The grant was announced Friday by Governor Paul Patton and comes from a portion of Kentucky's annual Surface Transportation Program funds for projects that add community or environmental value to a transportation project.

Their selections are based on factors such as its benefit to the community and environment, cost, the relationship of the project to tourism and historic preservation, geographic distribution and the availability of matching funds.
