Funding announced for Crooked Creek repairs

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced today emergency road funding for the Lewis County Fiscal Court.

The county has been authorized to receive $55,000 to repair three embankment failures on Crooked Creek Road. The three slides are located 0.850, 1.495 and 1.991 miles east of Trinity Station Road.

"This project is just one example of the Cabinet's commitment to recognizing a problem and taking action for a solution," said acting Secretary Bill Nighbert. "These emergency funds are being used to improve safety and mobility in Lewis County."

Lewis County awarded ag development funds

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, chaired by Governor Ernie Fletcher, mailed checks totaling $116,281 in support of agricultural diversification programs in Lewis County. The Lewis County Conservation District submitted proposals for cost-share assistance to the Lewis County Agricultural Development Council and the Agricultural Development Board.

The Lewis County Conservation District was awarded $105,000 for the Hay, Straw and Commodity Storage program in Lewis County. This program offers cost-share assistance to individual producers seeking to increase income by implementing the best practices related to hay, straw and commodity storage and utilization. Using these practices will then improve feed and straw quality.

The Lewis County Conservation District was awarded $11,281 for the Shared-use program in Lewis County. This program was established with the purpose of impacting a high number of producers, who cannot justify ownership expenses associated with certain equipment, by helping them access technology necessary to improve their operations in an economical manner.

The Kentucky Legislature continues to make great strides towards lessening Kentucky's dependence on tobacco production while revitalizing the farm economy by investing 50% of Kentucky's Master Settlement Agreement into the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund. To date Kentucky has invested over $169 million to an array of county, regional, and state projects designed to increase net farm income and create sustainable new farm-based business enterprises. The Lewis County diversification program represents just one of the over 1930 projects that have been funded through Agricultural Development Fund, since the inception of the program in January 2001.

For more information about the sign-up period and the guidelines for programs administered by the Lewis County Conservation District, contact Regina Justice at 606-796-3866. To learn more about cost-share and loan programs available in your area contact the Governor's Office of Agricultural Policy at 502-564-4627.
