Dr. O'Cull appointed to MSU Board of Regents

Governor Ernie Fletcher announced his first appointments to the university governing boards at each of the state's postsecondary educational institutions and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Among the appointments is Lewis County resident Dr. John D. O'Cull to the Morehead State University Board of Regents.

On June 10, the bi-partisan Postsecondary Education Nominating Committee delivered a list of nominees to the governor.

Appointees were chosen from the list of nominees. Each appointment was effective July 1 and each appointee will serve a term of six years.

Dr. O'Cull is Lewis County's first member of the Morehead State University Board of Regents in nearly 50 years. He is a practicing dentist at O'Cull Family Dentistry in Vanceburg.

He graduated from MSU with a BS in biology/chemistry. While studying at Morehead, he won the Kentucky Board of Dentistry rural Kentucky scholarship.

He has held a variety of both elected and non-elected posts, including previous service as Lewis County Coroner.

Appeals court reinstates Sonny Landham's lawsuit

(AP) A federal appeals court has reinstated a $310 million lawsuit filed by former a tough-guy actor against the US Department of Justice.

Sonny Landham, an Ashland resident who played on action movies with Arnold Schwartzenegger and Eddie Murphy, is seeking damages for nearly three years he spent in federal prison.

His conviction for making threatening and obscene phone calls to his now ex-wife was overturned by an appeals court that concluded Landham's phone calls to his ex-wife were emotionally charged, but neither threatening nor obscene.

US District Judge Karl Forester of Lexington dismissed the lawsuit last year, saying the complaint failed to state a claim. Landham, representing himself, appealed that decision.

A three-judge panel of the US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week that the lawsuit should not have been dismissed.

Landham filed the suit in September 2002 in US District Court in Ashland, the same venue that sentenced him to prison. He claims in the lawsuit that the Department of Justice violated his constitutional rights by unjustly imprisoning him.

Landham said he was imprisoned for using the same kinds of harsh words that many souses exchange in heated arguments.
