City Council authorizes
radio payment
|
By Al Owens
Meeting in regular session last week the Vanceburg City Council moved to pay its portion of the cost of new radio equipment made possible through a Homeland Security Grant to both the city and the county.
Both governmental entities will pay for the equipment up front and then be reimbursed through the grant. It has already been approved.
The city's cost totals $12,914.68.
The council adopted a routine annual resolution to contribute matching funds of $1,080 to the Narcotics Task Force through the Buffalo Trace Area Development District in order to fight drug abuse in the five-county area.
|
A request to plant a tree in the Veterans Memorial Park in memory of a deceased loved one was tabled for further discussion and consideration.
Vanceburg Mayor William T. "Bill Tom" Cooper indicated that a tree might be planted at the boat dock, but the city can’t permit everyone who wishes to plant a memorial tree in the park.
The council authorized Cooper to purchase a new 25-hp mower to be used at the boat dock. At his suggestion the cost is not to exceed $3,000.
The council approved the minutes of the previous meeting and then entered closed executive session to discuss proposed or pending litigation but no action was taken.
The meeting was adjourned after the council returned to open session.

Depot Museum now open
|
More volunteers have agreed to keep the Depot Museum open additional hours.
However, there is still a need for more volunteers to fill in on days it is only open two hours, and there are days when it is not open at all.
If you can donate, two, four or eight hours a month, call Patty Kennard at he mayor's office, 606-796-3044, and let her know you are available.
There are two new exhibits that visitors will enjoy. One exhibit features information about Judge George Morgan Thomas and his family.
|
He built the house that later became the Commercial Hotel, which is now being restored as it was when he and his family lived there.
The second exhibit is a display of a beautiful lace dress that was called the second day dress (after the wedding). Also displayed are baby clothes that were used in 1910. Sue Ann Plummer Rader loaned these items to the museum. They belonged to her grandmother, Lucy Plummer.
Please stop by and see the new exhibits as well as the permanent military and railroad exhibits.
