Vanceburg youth injured in auto/pedestrian accident

By Dennis Brown

A Vanceburg youth was injured last week when he was struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway.

Vanceburg Police Lt. Tom Flannigan said the incident happened about 3:23 p.m. Wednesday on Rowley Avenue in Vanceburg.

David Thompson, who is a resident of Rowley Avenue, and Angela Sullivan, who is the mother of the child, told Flannigan the five-year-old boy was on a bicycle in the street when a vehicle began to back out of a nearby driveway, he said.

Flannigan said Sullivan reportedly yelled at the vehicle’s driver to stop, but the operator of the vehicle, Louise Kennard of Garrison, didn’t hear the mother or see the child in the street.

He said the child was struck by the vehicle and was trapped beneath it. Flannigan said Sullivan told Kennard to move

the vehicle and the child’s father came out of the house and carried the child to the front porch of the family residence.

Flannigan said the child was taken to Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville by MedCorp Ambulance and was later transferred to the University of Kentucky Trauma Center in Lexington.

The youth was reportedly released from the medical center on Thursday.

Authorities attempted to obtain a medical helicopter to transport the child but were unable to because of weather conditions.

Flannigan, who is investigating the accident, was assisted at the scene by MedCorp Ambulance and Emergency Management Director Carl Chaney.

Garrison man hurt in single vehicle accident

By Dennis Brown

A Garrison man was injured in a single vehicle accident last week, according to a spokesman with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Dwayne Stone said he responded to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Ky. Rt. 8 and Cole Bivens Lane in Quincy and arrived to find a 1997 Toyota Avalon which had struck a tree and the driver of the auto, Gary Willis, 41, of Garrison, was lying on the ground.

Stone said upon investigation it was determined Willis had been traveling in the eastbound lane of Ky. Rt. 8 when he

dropped off the right shoulder into a ditchline and traveled 192 feet, struck a driveway culvert and went airborne.

Stone said the vehicle traveled 48 feet, hit the ground and overturned twice before striking the tree, where it came to rest.

Stone said Willis was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WV, for treatment.

The accident happened about 2:15 a.m. Sunday and remains under investigation by Stone. He was assisted at the scene by Garrison Fire and Rescue, MedCorp Ambulance and Health Net Medical Helicopter.

Ashland man charged in theft of cash

By Dennis Brown

An Ashland man has been charged in connection with the theft of an envelope of cash accidently left on the counter at a Vanceburg convenience store last week.

Vanceburg Police Chief Joe Billman said the incident happened Thursday when Andrea Hardymon of Tollesboro cashed a payroll check and used some money from the bank envelope to pay for a gasoline purchase at Clark’s Pump-n-Shop (formerly Bee Mart) on the AA Highway in Vanceburg.

Billman said Hardymon inadvertently left the bank envelope, which contained over $1,600 in cash, on the counter. After realizing what had happened and finding the envelope was

no longer on the counter at the convenience store, she notified authorities.

Billman said after a short investigation he determined a male subject had removed the envelope from the counter and located a suspect delivering Girl Scout Cookies at the Vanceburg Lions Club building on Fairlane Drive in Vanceburg.

Billman said Mark Bundy, 34, of Ashland, was charged with theft by unlawful taking, over $500, and lodged in the Lewis County Detention Center. Billman added the money was recovered and returned to Hardymon.

Billman is continuing the investigation into the incident.

Postmaster Ron McCleese retires from Tollesboro Post Office

By Dennis Brown

Several Tollesboro residents stopped by their local post office Friday to bid farewell to Ron McCleese.

McCleese has served as the postmaster of the Tollesboro Post Office for nearly 17 years and spent a big part of his last day visiting with the postal customers he has come to know well during his time there.

McCleese, who resides at Greenup, has spent 30 years with the postal service working in post offices in Webbville, Greenup, Ashland and Olive Hill before coming to Tollesboro.

McCleese was presented with a detailed replica of the Tollesboro Post Office made by James King, who meticulously crafted the replica, complete with a small postal box in the front.

The replica was signed by several post office regulars who wish McCleese well in his retirement.

McCleese says he has a motorcycle and kayak, which he plans to dust off and put to use, visit with his five sisters and has already lined up several hours a week to volunteer for various causes.

Shirley Porter will be serving as the Officer in Charge of the Tollesboro Post Office until a new postmaster is named. Porter has most recently overseen operations at the Quincy Post Office.

Two charged after alleged drug deal

By Dennis Brown

Two Tollesboro men have been charged after allegedly selling Oxycontin to an informant for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department.

A spokesman with the department said Eric McNutt, 31, and Jamie Hunt, 31, both of Tollesboro, allegedly sold four 40 milligram Oxycontin pills to a confidential informant last week.

Deputies made a traffic stop on the vehicle the two were in shortly after the alleged transaction, according to the spokesman. He said McNutt jumped from the vehicle and fled into a wooded area. He was apprehended near the AA Highway following a 45 minute foot pursuit by deputies, the spokesman added.

The spokesman said both men had marked money, which was used in the transaction, in their possession when they were

 apprehended.

McNutt was charged with first degree trafficking in a controlled substance and fleeing/evading police. Hunt was charged with first degree complicity to traffic in a controlled substance. Both were lodged in the Lewis County Detention Center under $10,000 cash bond, according to the spokesman.

The incident remains under investigation by Deputy Jason Hill and Chief Deputy Johnny Bivens. They were assisted by Deputy Tom Polley, Deputy Dwayne Stone and Deputy Joe Templeman. The spokesman said Sheriff Patrick Boggs and Sgt. Matt Gallenstein with the Mason County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

The spokesman said McNutt was also being sought as a suspect in a burglary in Mason County and additional charges against him are pending.
