Husband charged in shooting incident

A Lewis County woman was injured by a gunshot last week in Ashland and her husband has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot her in the head.

A spokesman with the Ashland Police Department said he incident happened about noon on Thursday in a parking garage elevator at King's Daughters Medical Center.

The spokesman said Cathy Horsley, 51, and Terry Scott Horsley, both of Scotts Branch Road, reportedly got into the elevator at the fifth floor of the parking garage, adding that two guards from the Federal Correctional Institution at Summitt were also on the elevator.

Terry Horsley reportedly asked the uniformed officers if they were security guards and, after they replied they were not, Horsley then produced a semi-automatic handgun and shot Cathy Horsley in the face.

The two guards disarmed Horsley and held him until officers with the Ashland Police Department arrived.

Cathy Horsley was taken to the emergency room at King's Daughters Medical Center where she was stabilized and later transferred to Cabell Huntington Hospital, a level 2 trauma center in West Virginia, where she was listed in serious but stable condition.

Terry Horsley has pleaded not guilty in Boyd County District Court to the charge of attempted murder and bond was set at $50,000 cash.

Two injured in AA accident

Two people were injured last week in an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a Ford Mustang at the intersection of Ky. Rt. 59 and the AA Highway.

Vanceburg Police Chief Joe Billman said the accident happened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday as the Mustang, operated by Amy Sexton, 28, of Vanceburg, was traveling north on Rt. 59 and apparently pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer, operated by Douglas Robinson, 64, of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, traveling west on the AA Highway.

Billman said the truck struck the Mustang on the passenger side, went off the right side of the road and through the guardrail on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The truck then traveled about 200 feet in a drainage ditch adjacent to the highway and overturned, coming to rest in Dry Run Creek, a tributary of Salt Lick.

The Mustang came to rest in the eastbound emergency lane next to the guardrail on the south side of the highway.

Robinson and Sexton were both taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, by Portsmouth Ambulance. Billman said Sexton declined treatment at the hospital.

Traffic on the AA and Rt. 59 was disrupted for several hours as crews cleared the scene.

Vanceburg Police Chief Joe Billman looks over one of the vehicles involved in an accident last week at the intersection of Ky. Rt. 59 and the AA Highway.

Traffic warning lights at the intersection were also inoperable as a result of the truck striking a control box for the lights.

Billman credited the truck driver for his skills and in minimizing the severity of the accident.

Crews with Gahm's Wrecker Service were on the scene until after midnight Thursday to remove the tractor-trailer and the 48,000 pounds of plate glass being hauled on the trailer. Environmental response crews continued to work to contain the spill of an estimated 75 gallons of diesel fuel into the creek.
